The American Walking Pony is about 14 hands high. It has a clean, smallish head on a well arched musled neck. The back is short, the shoulder slightly sloped, and the hips are well muscled. The American Walking pony is a combination of the Tennessee Walking Horse and the Welsh Pony.

The American Walking pony has three gaits. They are the Pleasure Walk, the Merry Walk, and the canter. The Pleasure Walk and the Merry Walk are faster than a normal walk. Sometimes they are described as being light and free.
